Plaza de Mayo: witness of our city's history

Plaza de Mayo (de Mayo square) is without any question the most important square of Argentina. Located in the Monserrat neigborhood and walking distance from the Financial District, this square was (and still is) the center stage of many historical moments in Buenos Aires.
Founded as Plaza de Mayo in 1884, but dating as a square all the way to 1580 when it was called Plaza Mayor, this piece of land was witness of events that will be forever linked to our history.

Around Plaza de Mayo, you will find most of our most important historical buildings, such as the Cabildo (town council) the city's Cathedral, Nation's Bank, city's goverment building and of course the Casa Rosada, the Goverment's Palace.
The square iteslf has plenty of important monuments like the square's Piramid, erected in 1811 to celebrate the May's Revolution anniversary.

Celebrations and manifestations are in order at Plaza de Mayo, every time a big event (especially political) takes place in town thousands of people gather here, since the square faces de Goverment Palace (Eva Peron gave her final speech from one of its balconies to the people at Plaza de Mayo)
But if we have to name one event taking place every week since 1977, is of course the meeting of the "Madres de Plaza de Mayo" (an organization founded by the mothers and even grandmothers now, of people who disappeared during our last dictatorship) They meet every week around the Piramid to reclaim for the whereabouts of their love ones (even the famous head white scarfs drawings are still painted on the ground) They gather every thursday at 3:30PM

Visiting the Plaza de Mayo will give you the chance to experience the place where pretty much everything started!, our city's first moments happened here and a lot more since then.
The Plaza de Mayo is only 15' away from our Hotel. We will be happy to assist you with directions so you can enjoy not only the square but all interesting places around it.
