The Metropolitan Cathedral: the city's main catholic church
Located in front of the Plaza de Mayo, we can find the main catholic church in Argentina. It is located in the neighborhood of San Nicolas, at San Martin St. and Rivadavia Ave.
Its construction began in 1580, at the time of Juan de Garay (founder of the city of Buenos Aires) and to date it has had to be rebuilt at least 6 times.
The Cathedral from Plaza de Mayo
The Metropolitan Cathedral was built as such in 1620, with the creation of the Diocese of Buenos Aires. In 1865 it became Metropolitan and on January 29, 1936 it was designated as the main Catholic Church of Argentina. The Cathedral was declared a National Historic Monument in 1942.
The construction of the current facade began in 1753 and has many different architectural styles. its twelve columns represent the twelve apostles and the exterior, that could remind us of a Greek temple, is a replica of the front of the Bourbon Palace in Paris. The diversity of styles inside is due to how complicated and long its construction was, which started in the XVllI century and were completed in the early XX century. The Cathedral passed through the hands of various architects and artists, who changed and added their own elements, that’s why we can find Baroque and mainly Romanesque style.
Its five naves include the "venecitas" on its floor (tiny mosaics) brought from England, and the dome with Renaissance frescoes and the Baroque high altar, carved in wood.
The Cathedral also functions as a museum of honor to Pope Francis, who assumed as archbishop of Buenos Aires from 1998 until his consecration as Supreme Pontiff in 2013.In the museum we can find personal and liturgical objects Jorge Bergoglio used during the 15 years of his ministry Pastoral in the City.
Also you will find the mausoleum of Jose de San Martin "the father of our country", whose remains rest at the Cathedral since 1880 after being in France since his death in 1850.
