Floralis Genérica: a moving art piece

In Plaza De Las Naciones, just a 10' car ride away from out Hotel, you'll find the breathtaking Floralis Generica, a 18 tons aluminium and stainless steel sculpture created and donated by the argentine arquitect Eduardo Catalano, this magestic piece of art stand 20 mts tall (65 ft) above the surface and it was created as an hommage to all the flowers in the city, who "reborn" every day when they open at morning.
It was first displayed in 2002 and probably is the first mayor sculpture controlled by hydraulics.

The Floralis "closed"at night

The six petals open or "bloom" every day at 8AM and close for the night at sunset, showing a red light from its interior. The petals may be closed during strong winds in order to protect the estructure of the flower. Also during especial holidays, the petals remain open all day long.

The materials were donated by the Lockeed Martin Aircraft company, famous for their military planes and passanger carriers like the L-1011, so if you watch the petals from up close you'll notice the same rivets and materials as an airplane.

The petals wide open during the day

The mechanism of the flower was out of service for a few years, but in 2015 it was fixed and now it is able to showcase its beauty every single day.
