The center piece of our city

This is one of the most important landmarks of Buenos Aires, a big monument celebrating the quadricentennial of the first foundation of the city of Buenos Aires in 1536 by Pedro de Mendoza.
The Obelisk is located in the middle of the 9 de julio Ave. and it is a great place to take a picture showing your visit on Buenos Aires!, since it is one of the most iconic constructions located in the most important avenue in town, if not the country!

Let us tell you a little bit of its history.
Ereted 1936, it stands where our flag was raised for the first time, the arquitect in charge of the project was Alberto Prebich, a modernist who also designed the Gran Rex theater (just a couple of blocks away from the Obelisk in Corrientes Ave 857, and one of the most important venues in the city for concerts)

The Obelisk stands 67.5 mts tall (or 221 ft) it was built with white stone from the province of Cordoba and represented on its facades, you'll find the dates of four of the most important moments in our history (first foundation of our city in 1536, the second and defenitive foundation in 1580, inaugural raising of our flag in 1812 and the declaration of Buenos Aires as the nation's capital in 1880)

The Obelisk as it stands today

It only took 31 days to complete, the San Nicolas de Bari church used to be where the Obelisk stands now, but it had to be demolished in order to make room for it (the church moved to its current location, to Santa Fe Ave 1352) and at first, porteños didn't like it! It was actually almost taken down in 1939! Some people thought it was an eyesore! Luckly the Obelisk still stands after all these years, and we can't concieve the idea of Buenos Aires without it. Witness of happy times (every time a mayor soccer game takes place, the winning team celebrates here) and sad times (protests take the Obelisk as a meeting point) this monument is a testament of the city to all its citizens and visitors and a welcome becon to all the people who comes here to celebrate Buenos Aires.
