El Ateneo Grand Splendid: the world's most beautiful bookstore is in Buenos Aires
Among the great
things our Hotel has to offer, one is its location (you know what they say about
real state, everything is about "location location location") and
well...we do have it! Since we are located in the heart of one of the most
beautiful neighborhoods of the city, Recoleta has a great deal of places worth
visiting and only 7 blocks away from the Hotel you will find one of the most
(if not THE MOST) beautiful bookstore in the world: El Ateneo Grand Splendid.
Let us tell you a little bit about its history before you visit it...
The building
opened as a theater in 1919, a flood of recent immigrants (especially from Italy and
Spain) helped fuel the rich cultural scene of arts (including the famous
Tango!)
The Grand Splendid had a seating capacity of 1050 and it staged performers such as Carlos Gardel. In 1929 was converted into a cinema, and it was the first place to broadcast the first sound film in Argentina the same year.
The eclecticist building features frescoes painted by Nazareno Orlandi (Italy) and caryatids sculpted by Troiano Troiani
During the late 90's the cimena closed and The Ateneo Bookstore opened instead in December 2000, after a long renovation. Since then, this magical place is a haven for avid readers worldwide (it is estimated a 1 million people visit each year!)
Not only you will find
thousands of titles to browse, but there is also a music section to buy records and a beautiful café where the stage used to be, to see the bookstore from where
the action was!
A tip: Best places to take amazing pictures? Go to the top balcony, particularly a little bit off center (either side) this will allow you to avoid other tourists taking selfies at dead center, another amazing place is from the stage when you are enjoying a coffee.
