Casa Rosada: emblem of our goverment

The Casa Rosada (meaning Pink House) is the where the Goverment's headquarter are located.

It was constructed on the site as a fort, established by the Spanish in 1580 and used by the Spanish colonial viceroys. After independence, the fort was redeveloped into a customs house by British architect Edward Taylor, and later, in 1862, the building was chosen by President Bartolomé Mitre to be the seat of his government. His successor Domingo Faustino Sarmiento later expanded the building and is believed to have ordered it to be painted pink in an attempt to diffuse political tensions by mixing the colours of the opposing political parties (the Federals used red, while the Unitarians used white). Another popular explanation for the building's distinctive colour is that it was at one painted with cows' blood as an alternative to paint because paint pealed in the humidity.

La Casa Rosada is one of the attraction points to visit if you decide to walk around Plaza de Mayo. This beautiful building was constructed with eclectic and romanticism styles and is full of argentinian history. Many events took place here and usually the argentinian people celebrate or in some instances, manifestations are also held in front of this building, like when the people cried over Eva Peron's last speech or celebrated in 1983, when democracy returned after the military took control in 1976.

Over the last few years, the Casa Rosda was under mayor renovations, so you'll be able to see it as intended in full glory.

During happy or difficult times the Casa Rosada remains to be a monument that gathers citizens together.
