Fans (as known as Bosteros) at the Bombonera during a match
The stadium was inaugurated on May 25th 1940 in the famous neighborhood of La Boca, before that, the team had several fields also in or around La Boca, but it was in 1931 when the construction of the current stadium was declared the official "home" for Boca Jrs.
The soccer team was founded by italian immigrants in 1905, and its famous yellow and blue colors is an hommage to the flag of Sweden, since the first president of the club also worked at the port in La Boca, and when choosing colors for his team one day, he said he was going to choose the colors of the first ship entering the port that day...and it was a ship from Sweden, the rest is history.
The stadium went through several modifications and improvments over the years, but the shape remains the same, La Bombonera (meaning box of chocolates) has this peculiar name because during the 1950's the president of the club at that time, received a box of chocolates as a gift with the same shape as the stadium, the joke catched on between the board of director of club, and since then this fun name is part of its legacy.
The stadium also houses a museum founded in 2001, where you can witness all the mayor events that took place there and also take a tour around the stadium!
If you are a soccer fan, don't miss the chance to visit this one of a kind stadium filled with history and passion for the sport.
